Classes in March

Come celebrate the spring at SCAHC with this unique opportunity to learn a skill and folk tradition with Jenny Santa Maria!

Pysanky is an ancient art of creating beautiful designs on eggs. Patterns are drawn on the egg with hot beeswax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process, a multi-colored pattern is built up. The wax is removed at the end to reveal the colors that were covered up at each stage. A great deal of patience and concentration is required to complete a single egg, but it is very rewarding to reveal your hard work when the wax is taken off.

All skill levels can create an original pysanka. No prerequisite skills are required.

This workshop will cover the history and traditions surrounding pysanky, demonstration, and an independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of organic eggs and dyes; all supplies are included. This meditative and communal experience is unlike any other art process and for many this workshop marks the beginning of a springtime family tradition that can be passed on and enjoyed for years to come.

In-person attendance will be extremely limited. Please bring a container or old egg carton to take home your creation. For ages 18 and older.

We have 2 classes on Sunday, March 30! One in the morning, and one in the afternoon. Please sign up for your desired time slot below. Last year both classes sold out very quickly, so we suggest singing up in advance to reserve your seat!

There are two images placed one on top of the other. The image on top is a picture of Jenny Santa Maria. She is sitting in front of a basket of pysanky eggs and a lit candle. She’s also holding a match that has been blown out, and smiling at the camera. The picture on the far bottom is several eggs decorated in the pysanky style nestled in a white cloth. The eggs are a mix of geometric and Art Deco designs in purples, oranges, blues, reds, and greens.
