Man-Made and Natural Architecture On View

This exhibition invited artists to explore the tension, harmony, and parallels between the constructed and the organic. From towering skyscrapers and sprawling cityscapes to the intricate architecture of bird nests, flowing rivers, and rugged mountains—this theme celebrates structure in all its forms.

Artists were encouraged to interpret the theme in any way, welcoming both abstract and representational approaches, as well as all styles and mediums. Whether through literal depictions or conceptual explorations, this show seeks to showcase the diverse ways structure influences our environments, imaginations, and sense of place.

Abstract Painting with Collage, Gesso, and Acrylics

    Date: Saturday, September 13, 2025  |  1-4 PM

Location: SCAHC Spring Street Gallery – 133 Spring Street | Newton, NJ 07860

Dive into expressive painting through playful gestures, layered collage, gesso, and fluid acrylic pigments with renowned local artist and current President of the New Jersey Watercolor Society Ann Smiga Greene. She is a signature member of several prestigious art societies, including the American Watercolor Society and the International Society of Experimental Artists, and her work has been showcased in fine art exhibitions and earned awards in both national and international competitions.

In this workshop, you’ll explore loose, spontaneous mark-making using markers and pencils. Collage elements will be added to build shapes, contrast, and texture. Gesso and fluid acrylics are added to create areas of negative space—highlighting the dynamic relationship between shape, value, and key design principles. The emphasis is on personal expression, while also learning about collage, water media tools and techniques. Paint what you feel—layer by layer.

Open to artists of all levels, this workshop invites creative exploration without predetermined outcomes, planning, or drawing. Whether your work tends toward abstraction or representation, Ann will support you in developing your unique artistic voice. Bold strokes, dynamic compositions, and an openness to the unexpected are at the heart of this experience—allowing your art to evolve naturally and authentically.

Materials will be provided. However, students are welcome to bring collage papers of their choice if desired.

Please register in advance to guarantee your spot; spaces are limited. Go to our Workshops and Classes page to register, or call us at 973-383-0027.

    Haunting Exhibition On View

    September 24 – October 23

Haunting can be defined as “poignant and evocative, difficult to ignore or forget”. This spooky season, we invited our artists to make some “haunting” artwork by exploring mythology, fairytales, history, and imagination. Whether they are capturing the eerie essence of the nighttime forest, highlighting the creatures that lurk in the shadows, or exploring histories that humans have forgotten, we invited them to submit works that possess the imagination!

Stop in and see what they have created!
